• Institute of East Asian Societies and Economies

Institute of East Asian Societies and Economies(IEASE) was founded by Dr. Cheng-shu Kao in February, 1987.
The main purpose of IEASE is to focus on the long-term economic and structural changes in East Asian societies through inter-societal networking study.
From 1987 onwards, IEASE has conducted many network-related projects on the topics of medium and small businesses and industrial changes in
Taiwan, Hong-Kong and China.

Accumulated 10 years field-study experiences, IEASE not only provides a discursive forum for native and international social scientists, but also plays a constructive role for re-evaluating the current medium and small businesses and industrial policies.  Through every field-study opportunity, IEASE tries every efforts to bridge the gaps between academic and other social sectors, between theoretical study and everyday social practices.

IEASE is undergoing an interdisciplinary and international study on the socio-economic development among Taiwan, Hong-Kong, and China, which associates with the Department of Sociology of the ChineseAcademy of Social Sciences in China, Bei-jingUniversity, ChineseUniversity of Hong Kong, University of Washington at Seattle, etc.

IEASE published two different versions of the journal of  Society and Economy. One is an monthly-based publication for IEASE members only, which has distributed for more than 80 volumes.  The other is first published in March, 1997 for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of IEASE.  Besides, IEASE joint the “Taiwan Study Series” conducted by Lien-jin Publishing Company, and is responsible for the publication of “Serial Study of East Asian Societies and Economies,” which already published several IEASE's comparative studies for the analysis of Chinese societies.

The members of IEASE includes senior supervisor, Dr. Cheng-shu Kao, director, Dr. Chien-hsuan Chen, and many associate Professors from the Department of Sociology in TunghaiUniversity.  Based on the IEASE's rich field-study experiences, many Ph. D. students and graduate students actively participate all researches and use related data for their Ph.D. dissertations and M.A. thesis.
